Leslie Edward Claypool, born on September 29, 1963, is an American musician known primarily as the founder, lead singer, bassist, and main songwriter of the band Primus. He is recognized for his distinctive bass playing style that combines tapping, flamenco-like strumming, whammy bar bends, and slap and pop techniques. Rolling Stone has ranked him among the greatest bassists of all time. In addition to his work with Primus, Claypool has participated in various other musical projects, including supergroups such as Oysterhead, which features Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland, and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, comprising Buckethead, Bryan Mantia, and Bernie Worrell. He has also formed duos like Duo de Twang with Bryan Kehoe and the band The Claypool Lennon Delirium alongside Sean Lennon. As the frontman of experimental rock groups such as Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade and Les Claypool's Fancy Band, he has expanded his musical range. Claypool is also involved in production and engineering at his Rancho Relaxo studio in California. His work extends into television and film; he appears in the opening credits of the animated series South Park, which features the band Primus performing the theme song since 1997. In 2006, Claypool expanded into filmmaking and writing, debuting as a director and author with the mockumentary Electric Apricot: Quest For Festeroo and publishing the novel South of the Pumphouse.
