Warren Kenneth Paxton Jr. is an American politician and lawyer serving as the attorney general of Texas since 2015. A member of the Republican Party, he has a background in state politics, having served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2003 to 2013 and as a senator representing the eighth district from 2013 to 2015. Paxton was indicted on state securities fraud charges relating to activities prior to his tenure as attorney general; he pleaded not guilty and fulfilled a pretrial agreement involving restitution, ethics training, and community service, leading to the charges' dismissal in 2025. In 2023, he was impeached by the Texas House of Representatives on multiple allegations including giving preferential treatment to a political donor, misusing public resources, making false statements, obstructing justice, and misrepresenting his financial interests. The Texas Senate acquitted him of all articles of impeachment in September 2023, ending his suspension. Paxton is known as a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and is characterized by some as an ultraconservative or far-right politician. He supported efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results, aiding Trump in legal actions and participating in the rally preceding the January 6 Capitol attack. Throughout President Biden's tenure, Paxton has initiated numerous legal actions against his administration. In 2025, Paxton announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in Texas; he defeated incumbent senator John Cornyn in a runoff for the Republican nomination and is set to face Democrat James Talarico in the general election.
