John Woo Yu-sen is a Hong Kong filmmaker born on May 1, 1946. He is recognized as a highly influential figure in the action film genre, and his work has earned him various accolades including Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Editing, as well as awards from the Golden Horse Awards, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and the Saturn Awards. Woo is regarded as a pioneer of heroic bloodshed films and the gun fu genre within Hong Kong action cinema. His signature style features highly chaotic bullet ballet sequences, stylized imagery, Mexican standoffs, the frequent use of slow motion, and allusions to wuxia, film noir, and Western cinema. He has directed several notable action films and is known for his collaborations with actor Chow Yun-fat on five films, including A Better Tomorrow, which boosted Chow Yun-fat's popularity across Asia. Woo's filmography also includes martial arts movies such as The Dragon Tamers and Last Hurrah for Chivalry, as well as action comedies like Follow the Star and Run, Tiger, Run. His American debut was the film Hard Target in 1993, which marked the first major Hollywood film directed by an Asian filmmaker. His other Hollywood projects include Broken Arrow, Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible 2. Woo also directed the Canadian remake of Once a Thief and returned to Chinese cinema with films such as The Crossing and Red Cliff, the latter of which broke box office records in mainland China. Additionally, Woo created the comic series Seven Brothers and is the founder and chairman of the production company Lion Rock Productions.
