He has served as the Member of Parliament for Hayes and Harlington since 1997. McDonnell held the position of Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2015 to 2020, a role in which he prioritized increasing spending on infrastructure and research. His economic vision has been described as 'socialism with an iPad.' He has been a prominent figure in the Labour Party, particularly alongside Jeremy Corbyn, whom he supported during Corbyn's leadership. McDonnell has participated in leadership contests, standing for the Labour Party leadership in 2007 after Tony Blair's resignation and again in 2010 following Gordon Brown's departure, though he withdrew both times before securing enough nominations.
