About John Helliwell

John Anthony Helliwell, born on February 15, 1945, in Todmorden, West Riding of Yorkshire, is an English musician and professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia. He is best known as a saxophonist, secondary keyboardist, backing vocalist, and whistler for the progressive rock band Supertramp. His roles extended beyond performance; he also served as an MC during concerts, engaging audiences with conversation and jokes between songs. Helliwell's musical career began with The Alan Bown Set, where he joined in January 1966 to replace Dave Green. In 1973, he became a member of Supertramp, joining alongside bassist Dougie Thomson who encouraged the move. He continued to perform with the band through various projects, including forming the band Crème Anglaise in 2004 with Mark Hart. Helliwell contributed to Pink Floyd's 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason, where his name was misspelled as
