Joan Rivers was an American comedian, actress, producer, writer, and television host. Recognized for her blunt, often controversial comedic persona that was heavily self-deprecating and acerbic, she delivered her humor in a distinctive New York accent. She is considered a pioneer for women in comedy and received multiple awards including an Emmy and a Grammy, along with a Tony Award nomination. Rivers began her career in comedy clubs in Greenwich Village, performing alongside notable peers such as George Carlin, Woody Allen, and Richard Pryor. Her rise to prominence occurred in 1965 when she appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carson, which helped establish her comedic style. In 1986, she became the first woman to host a late night network television talk show with The Late Show with Joan Rivers, and she later hosted The Joan Rivers Show, winning a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host. From the mid-1990s, she was known for her comedic celebrity interviews on red carpet award shows. She co-hosted E's Fashion Police from 2010 to 2014 and starred in the reality series Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best with her daughter Melissa Rivers. Beyond her television career, Rivers marketed a line of jewelry and apparel, authored twelve bestselling books, and released three comedy albums.
