Joan Chen was born on April 26, 1961, and is a Chinese-born American actress and film director. She has received numerous accolades including four Taipei Golden Horse Awards and an AACTA Award. Chen made her film debut in the Chinese film Youth in 1977 and appeared in Little Flower in 1979. She gained international recognition for her role as Wanrong in the Bernardo Bertolucci film The Last Emperor in 1987, a project that won nine Academy Awards including Best Picture. Chen is known for leading roles in films such as Heaven & Earth, Golden Gate, Red Rose White Rose, Saving Face, Sunflower, and The Home Song Stories. She has also appeared in supporting roles in Lust, Caution, Tigertail, and Dìdi. As a filmmaker, Chen directed several feature films including Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl, Autumn in New York, English, and Hero. On television, she is recognized for her recurring role as Jocelyn Josie Packard in the series Twin Peaks created by David Lynch. Her other notable television performances include portraying Madame Chiang Kai-shek in the HBO film Hemingway Gellhorn, Chabi in the Netflix series Marco Polo, and Lu Mei in the FX on Hulu series A Murder at the End of the World.
