James Joseph Harbaugh, born on December 23, 1963, is an American professional football coach and former quarterback currently serving as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in the National Football League (NFL). Harbaugh has a notable coaching career that includes positions at the University of Michigan, where he led the team to three consecutive Big Ten Conference titles and secured a national championship in 2023. Prior to his tenure at Michigan, he was the head coach at the University of San Diego, Stanford University, and the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. He also served as an assistant coach while still a player, including at Western Kentucky University and the Oakland Raiders.

Harbaugh's playing career began at the University of Michigan, where he played college football as a quarterback from 1983 to 1986. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1986. Drafted in the first round of the 1987 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, he played as a quarterback for 14 seasons with several teams in the league, including the Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, and San Diego Chargers. During his playing career, he was selected to the Pro Bowl and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1995.

After retiring as a player, Harbaugh transitioned into coaching, including roles as a quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders and head coaching positions in college and the NFL. His coaching achievements include leading the 49ers to NFC Championship games and his Collegiate success culminating in Michigan’s first undisputed national championship since 1948. In January 2024, Harbaugh was appointed head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances in his initial seasons.
