About Jim Chalmers
James Edward Chalmers, born on 2 March 1978 in Brisbane, is an Australian politician currently serving as the treasurer of Australia in the Albanese government since 2022. He has been a member of the Australian Labor Party and has represented the Queensland division of Rankin in the House of Representatives since 2013. Chalmers graduated from Griffith University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Commerce, and he obtained a doctorate in political science from the Australian National University in 2004. His early career included roles as a research officer and manager for the Queensland government and the national Labor Party. Between 2002 and 2004, he held positions within the Labor Party's staff, and from 2005 to 2007, he served in senior advisory roles for prominent politicians, including Wayne Swan, Kim Beazley, and Morris Iemma. Following his election in 2013, Chalmers was appointed to the shadow ministry by Bill Shorten; he became a frontbencher in 2015 and continued in the shadow cabinet under Anthony Albanese after Shorten's retirement. His appointment as treasurer followed the Labor Party’s electoral victory in 2022, marking a significant progression in his political career.
