She was elected to the seat at the 2022 federal election as a teal independent and has a political legacy as the third generation of her family to sit in federal parliament, following her grandfather Sir Percy Spender and her father John Spender. Prior to her election, Spender worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company and served as managing director of her mother Carla Zampatti's fashion label. In 2026, she co-founded the political party Community Strong Australia with Zali Steggall, expanding her involvement in political initiatives.
