Jeremy Bernard Corbyn is a British politician who has served as the Member of Parliament for Islington North since 1983. Born in Chippenham, Wiltshire, he joined the Labour Party as a teenager and later became a trade union representative after moving to London. Corbyn was elected to Haringey Council in 1974 and served as Secretary of Hornsey Constituency Labour Party before his election to Parliament. Throughout his career, he has been active in various causes including anti-fascism, anti-apartheid efforts, nuclear disarmament, and advocating for a united Ireland and Palestinian statehood. As a backbencher, Corbyn frequently voted against the Labour whip, particularly during the New Labour governments, and was known for his opposition to the Iraq War. He chaired the Stop the War Coalition from 2011 to 2015 and received awards for his peace activism. In 2015, following Ed Miliband's resignation, Corbyn was elected leader of the Labour Party, a position he held until 2020. During his tenure, he moved the party leftward, advocating for renationalisation of utilities, a less interventionist military stance, and reversing austerity measures. He also supported the Remain campaign during the 2016 EU referendum. Corbyn's leadership was marked by both increased party membership and criticism over issues of antisemitism, which he condemned. He endorsed a referendum on Brexit in 2019, but Labour's vote share declined significantly in that year's general election. After his resignation as party leader, Corbyn was expelled from Labour and ran as an independent candidate in the 2024 election, winning re-election. In 2025, he co-founded Your Party with Zarah Sultana and was elected its parliamentary leader in March 2026.
