Jeff Peterson: podcast appearances and interviews

Jeff Peterson is an American slack key guitar player from Maui, Hawaii. He is the son of a paniolo at Haleakala Ranch and was exposed to slack key music from an early age. Peterson studied classical guitar at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music before returning to Hawaii to play and teach in the Honolulu area. His musical style is a fusion of traditional slack key with elements of classical and jazz guitar, and he is also skilled in these styles. Peterson has contributed to numerous albums, including a series of slack key and bamboo flute duets with Riley Lee, several compilations featuring the genre, and his solo album Maui On My Mind. He performed at BAM's Next Wave Festival in 2008 in collaboration with the string quartet ETHEL. His composition, Concerto for Slack Key Guitar, Mālama ʻĀina, was commissioned by the Raleigh Civic Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service; it premiered in 2016 with Peterson as the soloist. The concerto is dedicated to Hawaii's three volcanoes within the National Park System and was featured in the full-length film Wahi Pana. The Hawaii premiere took place in December 2017 with Peterson as soloist and Carl St. Clair conducting. Peterson has performed with many Hawaiian legends and internationally, including a stint with the Nashville Symphony. He has also served as a guitar professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
