Jean Michel Rollin Roth Le Gentil was a French film director, actor, and novelist born on November 3, 1938, and passed away on December 15, 2010. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he is recognized for his work in the fantastique genre. Rollin's early work included short films, and he gained notable acclaim with his first four vampire films, which include Le viol du vampire, La vampire nue, Le frisson des vampires, and Requiem pour un vampire. His subsequent films feature titles such as La rose de fer, Lèvres de sang, Les raisins de la mort, Fascination, and La morte vivante, reflecting his continued exploration of fantastical and horror themes. His films are characterized by their exquisite yet mostly static cinematography, unconventional plot progression, poetic dialogue, playful surrealism, and recurring well-constructed female lead characters. Outlandish plot twists and abstract visual symbols are hallmarks of his work. Despite often modest budgets and tight schedules, his high production values and craftsmanship gave his films a distinctive aesthetic.
