Jason Curtis Newsted, born on March 4, 1963, is an American musician primarily known for his role as the bassist of the heavy metal band Metallica from 1986 to 2001. Prior to joining Metallica, he performed with the thrash metal band Flotsam and Jetsam for the first five years of his career. He joined Metallica in October 1986 to replace the late Cliff Burton and contributed to the recording of the albums ...And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, Reload, and Garage Inc. Newsted departed from the band in January 2001.
