James Nash was an Australian prospector born on 5 September 1834 in Beanacre, Wiltshire, England. He migrated to Sydney, New South Wales at the age of 23 and later moved to Queensland in 1863, where he worked at Calliope and Nanango. Nash is widely recognized as the first person to discover gold in 1867 in the area now known as Gympie. His discovery followed an extended prospecting tour near the Mary River, culminating in a report dated 16 October that initiated one of the most significant gold rushes in Queensland history. Nash's identification of rich gold deposits played a crucial role in this event. He died in Gympie, Queensland, on 5 October 1913. During his lifetime, Nash contributed to the development of the region through his prospecting efforts and gold discoveries.
