J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist known for his leadership during the development of the first nuclear weapons. Born in New York City, he earned a degree in chemistry from Harvard University in 1925 and completed a doctorate in physics at the University of Göttingen in 1927, studying under Max Born. Oppenheimer contributed significantly to various fields of physics, including quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, and astrophysics. His work encompasses the Born–Oppenheimer approximation for molecular wave functions, research on positrons, quantum electrodynamics, and quantum field theory. He also made notable advances in understanding cosmic ray showers, neutron stars, and black holes. In 1941, he was briefed on nuclear weapon design by physicist Mark Oliphant and was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project in 1942. As director of the Los Alamos Laboratory from 1943, he oversaw efforts to develop nuclear weapons. His leadership was critical to the project's success, culminating in the first atomic bomb test, Trinity, in July 1945. The bombs were later used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, marking the only wartime deployment of nuclear weapons. After the war, Oppenheimer served as director of the Institute for Advanced Study and chaired the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission. He advocated for international control of nuclear technology, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and voiced concerns about the arms race. During the Red Scare, his past associations led to a security hearing and the revocation of his security clearance in 1954, a decision that was vacated in 2022. Oppenheimer continued his work in physics until his death in 1967, receiving numerous honors for his contributions.
