About J. Robert Oppenheimer

J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist known for his role as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project during World War II. He led the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico, overseeing the development of the first nuclear weapons. Born in New York City, Oppenheimer earned a degree in chemistry from Harvard University in 1925 and obtained a doctorate in physics from the University of Göttingen in Germany in 1927. His research included significant contributions to quantum mechanics and nuclear physics, such as the Born–Oppenheimer approximation for molecular wave functions, and work on positrons, quantum electrodynamics, and quantum field theory. Alongside his students, he advanced astrophysics, developing theories on cosmic ray showers, neutron stars, and black holes. In 1941, Oppenheimer was briefed on nuclear weapon design and was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project in 1942. He was appointed director of the Los Alamos Laboratory in 1943 and played a crucial role in the project's success. He was present at the Trinity test on July 16, 1945, the first detonation of an atomic bomb. The bombs were later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, Oppenheimer served as director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and chaired the General Advisory Committee of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. He advocated for international control of nuclear technology and opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb. His stances and past associations led to a security hearing during the Second Red Scare, resulting in the revocation of his security clearance in 1954. He continued to contribute to physics until his death in 1967, receiving the Enrico Fermi Award in 1963.
