Sir Idrissa Akuna Elba, born on September 6, 1972, is an English actor, DJ, rapper, and producer. He studied acting at the National Youth Music Theatre in London and gained prominence through various television roles. Elba played Tim in Family Affairs and gained international recognition for his portrayal of Stringer Bell in the HBO series The Wire from 2002 to 2004. He is well known for his role as DCI John Luther in the BBC One series Luther from 2010 to 2019, which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and four Primetime Emmy Award nominations. His guest role in Showtime's The Big C and his leading role in Apple TV+ series Hijack further showcased his versatility as an actor. On film, he has appeared in numerous notable projects including Beasts of No Nation, where his performance as a ruthless warlord earned him a SAG Award nomination. He portrayed Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, earning a Golden Globe nomination. His filmography includes roles in American Gangster, Prometheus, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Beyond, Molly's Game, Hobbs & Shaw, The Harder They Fall, and Three Thousand Years of Longing.
