About Hester Peirce
Hester Maria Peirce is an American lawyer serving as a Commissioner on the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. She was nominated by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate in December 2017 to fill a Republican vacancy on the SEC. Peirce was sworn in on January 11, 2018, and her second term is set to expire in 2025. Prior to her role at the SEC, she served as the director of the Financial Markets Working Group at George Mason University's Mercatus Center. Her previous experience includes work as a staff member for the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, as well as a past nomination by President Barack Obama for a Republican seat on the SEC in 2015, although the Senate did not act upon this nomination. Peirce is known for her critical stance toward enforcement and regulatory initiatives targeting cryptocurrency firms. She was appointed to lead the SEC's crypto task force during the second administration of President Donald Trump amidst a broader effort towards deregulation.
