Herschel Junior Walker, born March 3, 1962, is an American diplomat and former professional football running back. He has served as the United States ambassador to the Bahamas since 2025. A member of the Republican Party, Walker previously played in the National Football League for 12 seasons. He played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982. Walker spent the first three seasons of his professional career from 1983 to 1985 with the United States Football League's New Jersey Generals and was named MVP in his final year. After the USFL folded, he joined the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, earning consecutive Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors from 1987 to 1988. In 1989, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in what is regarded as one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history, a move credited with helping establish the Cowboys' dynasty of the 1990s. Walker also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants before retiring with the Cowboys and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Outside of football, he competed as a member of the United States bobsleigh team at the 1992 Winter Olympics and pursued business ventures in food processing. From 2019 to 2020, he served as a co-chair on the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition under President Donald Trump. Walker launched a political campaign in Georgia’s 2022 U.S. Senate election, ultimately losing to Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock in a runoff. His appointment as ambassador to the Bahamas was confirmed by the Senate in 2025.
