About Helen Fisher

Helen Elizabeth Fisher was an American anthropologist, human behavior researcher, and author known for her work in biological anthropology and the study of romantic love. She served as a senior research fellow at The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University and was a member of the Center For Human Evolutionary Studies at Rutgers University. Prior to her tenure at Rutgers, she was a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Fisher's research explored reproductive strategies and the biological basis of romantic attachment. She participated in pioneering studies using MRI technology to associate brain activity, including the ventral tegmental area responsible for dopamine production, with long-term romantic love. Her insights into the neurochemistry of love informed both academic research and practical applications, such as the development of matching systems like chemistry.com, created in collaboration with match.com. Fisher was a prominent speaker at TED conferences and was featured in mainstream media, including the ABC News 20/20 special, Why Him? Why Her? Her scholarly work includes numerous publications in anthropology and human behavior, with a particular focus on romantic love through empirical research. She appeared in documentaries such as Sleepless in New York and the PBS Nova special How to Find Love Online. Fisher advised on how neurochemistry could be leveraged to maintain long-term romantic attachment through physical contact, novel activities, and positive communication. She passed away from endometrial cancer in the Bronx on August 17, 2024, at the age of 79.
