Hector Hughes: podcast appearances and interviews

Hector Hughes (14 August 1887 – 23 June 1970) was a Scottish Labour Party politician who served as Member of Parliament for Aberdeen North from 1945 until his retirement in 1970. During his political career, he was elected in the Labour landslide and was re-elected through six subsequent general elections. Hughes was also active in various social causes; he fought for women's rights within the suffragette movement and advocated for the abolition of the death penalty. His contributions extended beyond politics as he was a published poet and authored the national anthem for Ghana at the time of its independence. Hughes began his political engagement during his university years at University College Dublin where he was involved with the Young Ireland Branch of the United Irish League. His advocacy work included campaigns for land redistribution to tenants. Hughes passed away in Brighton at the age of 82, shortly after retiring from the House of Commons and following the 1970 general election which resulted in a Conservative Party victory. Apart from his public service, he was recognized as an esteemed poet and a significant figure in various social and political movements. Hughes was the great-grandfather to Paul Walsh and Tonie Walsh, and grandfather to Sylvia Walsh, Denise Casey, Mark Quinn, Clem Quinn, and Benita Quinn Ahearne in Ireland. He was also the father of actress Isolde Hughes Cazelet and Finny Hughes McMullan.
