Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross around March 1822, was an American abolitionist and social activist known for her efforts to end slavery and promote social justice. After escaping slavery herself, she undertook approximately 13 missions to rescue around 70 enslaved individuals, including her family and friends. Utilizing a network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad, Tubman guided many to freedom. Her work extended beyond aiding escapees; during the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the Union Army. She is credited with guiding the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 enslaved people, and is often recognized as the first woman to lead an armed military operation in the United States. Tubman met abolitionist John Brown in 1858 and helped him in planning and recruiting supporters for his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. In her later years, she was active in the women's suffrage movement and cared for her aging parents at her family home in Auburn, New York, which she purchased in 1859. Born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, she endured physical punishment and a traumatic head injury as a child that caused lifelong health issues. Her Methodist upbringing and vivid spiritual experiences influenced her devout religious beliefs. Tubman's legacy is rooted in her remarkable courage, commitment to freedom, and activism for social justice.
