About Hannah Arendt

Hannah Arendt (born Johanna Arendt; 14 October 1906 – 4 December 1975) was a German and American historian and philosopher recognized as one of the most influential political theorists of the twentieth century. Her extensive body of work addressed diverse topics including the nature of wealth, power, fame, evil, politics, direct democracy, authority, tradition, and totalitarianism. Arendt is notably associated with her analysis of the trial of Adolf Eichmann, where she explored how ordinary individuals can become participants in totalitarian regimes. Her phrase, 'the banality of evil,' encapsulates her examination of the mechanisms of evil within bureaucratic systems. Born into a Jewish family in Linden, her early years were marked by the death of her father and her upbringing in a politically progressive, secular household. She studied at the University of Marburg under Martin Heidegger and completed her doctorate in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1929, with a dissertation on Love and Saint Augustine supervised by Karl Jaspers. In 1933, she was briefly imprisoned by the Gestapo for research into antisemitism and subsequently fled to Paris, where she aided Jewish youth emigration efforts. Following her detention as an alien during France's invasion, she escaped to the United States in 1941. Arendt became a writer and editor, working for Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, and gained American citizenship in 1950. Her publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism in 1951 solidified her reputation. She authored important works like The Human Condition, Eichmann in Jerusalem, and On Revolution while teaching at various American universities until her death in 1975.
