Hamish Clive Carter, born on 28 April 1971 in Auckland, is a notable New Zealand triathlete and Olympic gold medallist. Throughout his professional career, he competed extensively on the International Triathlon Union World Cup circuit, achieving victory in twelve races. Carter's athletic achievements include winning the bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and he is best known for securing the gold medal in triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics, held during his second Olympic appearance. At the Athens Games, he finished with a time of 1:51:07.73, narrowly surpassing fellow New Zealander Bevan Docherty by less than eight seconds. In addition to his Olympic success, Carter won a silver medal at the 2006 World Championships in Lausanne, finishing just 17 seconds behind Tim Don. That same year, he claimed victory at the Xterra World Championship in Maui, Hawaii, defeating a field of more experienced off-road triathletes. Carter had previously shown promise as a rower during his time at Auckland Grammar School, where he competed twice in the Maadi Cup. His career in triathlon concluded in early 2007 when he announced his retirement. Carter's achievements have established him as a prominent figure in the sport of triathlon within New Zealand and internationally.
