Guy Stuart Ritchie is an English filmmaker born on September 10, 1968. He is recognized for his work on British comedy gangster films and large-scale action-adventure movies. Ritchie left school at age 15 and began working in entry-level roles within the film industry before directing television commercials. His early directorial efforts include the short film The Hard Case in 1995, followed by his feature-length debut, the crime comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, in 1998. His second film, Snatch, released in 2000, achieved critical and commercial success. Ritchie's career includes directing the critically panned Swept Away in 2002, starring Madonna, to whom he was married at the time. He later directed Revolver in 2005 and RocknRolla in 2008, which received mixed reviews. In 2009 and 2011, he directed the box-office hits Sherlock Holmes and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, both starring Robert Downey Jr. The first film was nominated for Academy Awards in Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. Ritchie continued to direct notable films such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in 2015, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword in 2017, and Aladdin in 2019, the latter of which grossed over one billion dollars worldwide. He returned to crime comedy with The Gentlemen in 2019, which was well received.
