Gregory James LeMond, born on June 26, 1961, is an American former road racing cyclist known for his significant achievements in professional cycling. He began his career in 1981 and quickly made a mark by becoming the first American male cyclist to win the Road World Championship in 1983. LeMond's victory at the Tour de France in 1986 made him the first non-European professional cyclist to win the race. Throughout his career, he secured three Tour de France titles and two World Championships. In 1987, he sustained serious injuries after being accidentally shot with pellets while hunting, requiring two surgeries and causing him to miss two Tours. Demonstrating resilience, he returned to win the 1989 Tour de France in a dramatic final stage and successfully defended his title in 1990, joining a select group of cyclists with three or more Tour victories. LeMond retired from professional cycling in December 1994 and was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 1996. He broke new ground as the first cyclist to sign a million-dollar contract and as the first professional cyclist to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Beyond his racing accomplishments, LeMond has been influential in promoting technological advancements in cycling, including aerodynamic handlebars and carbon fiber bicycle frames, which he marketed through his company LeMond Bicycles. His business pursuits have extended into restaurants, real estate, and fitness equipment. An outspoken advocate against performance-enhancing drugs, LeMond is also a founding board member of 1in6, a nonprofit supporting male victims of child sex abuse.
