About Gil Fronsdal
Gil Fronsdal, born in 1954, is a Norwegian-born American Buddhist teacher, writer, and scholar based in Redwood City, California. He has been practicing Buddhism since 1975, engaging with the Sōtō Zen and Vipassanā sects. Fronsdal is the guiding teacher at the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City and has been actively involved in teaching the practice of Buddhism in the San Francisco Bay Area. His training includes ordination as a Sōtō Zen priest at the San Francisco Zen Center in 1982 and a period as a Theravāda monk in Burma in 1985. He received Dharma transmission from Mel Weitsman in 1995. Fronsdal holds a PhD in Buddhist Studies from Stanford University. His teachings, which are available online, cover fundamental aspects of meditation and Buddhism as well as more advanced concepts accessible to lay practitioners. He is recognized for analyzing the adaptation of Buddhist practice in the Western context, emphasizing the removal of Asian cultural expressions from practice to foster broader acceptance. Fronsdal has also discussed the role of morality in Western Insight Meditation and highlighted the appeal of Vipassanā for middle-class Americans due to its focus on right action without cultural baggage. His work includes translation efforts, such as the 2005 translation of the Dhammapada, which is used for educational purposes. Fronsdal's perspective on mindfulness underscores engagement with the world and the body, contrasting traditional world-renouncing Buddhist practices. He advocates for integrating traditional Buddhist values like loving-kindness, ethics, and generosity into a mindfulness-based spiritual life.
