Eugene Allen Hackman was an American actor born in San Bernardino, California. He had a career spanning over four decades and was regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Hackman was associated with the New Hollywood movement and earned several accolades including two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, one Silver Bear, and four Golden Globe Awards. His acting debut was in the film Lilith in 1964, and he achieved widespread recognition for his diverse roles in film. Hackman received acclaim for his portrayal of Jimmy Popeye Doyle in the action thriller The French Connection, for which he won his first Oscar for Best Actor. His second Oscar came for Best Supporting Actor in Clint Eastwood's Western Unforgiven, where he played a ruthless sheriff. Additionally, he was Oscar-nominated for roles in Bonnie and Clyde and Mississippi Burning. Hackman also gained fame for portraying Lex Luthor in three Superman films and starred in notable movies including The Conversation, Night Moves, Hoosiers, No Way Out, Crimson Tide, The Quick and the Dead, Get Shorty, Enemy of the State, and The Royal Tenenbaums. He retired from acting in 2004 and later authored novels and narrated television documentaries until 2017. His health declined in his later years, and he died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from complications related to Alzheimer's disease, severe heart disease, and kidney disease. Hackman passed away shortly after the death of his wife, Betsy Arakawa, along with one of their three dogs.
