Gareth L Powell: podcast appearances and interviews

Gareth Lyn Powell, born in 1970, is a British author recognized for his contributions to science fiction. His body of work includes the Embers of War trilogy, the Continuance series, the Ack-Ack Macaque trilogy, and the novel Light Chaser, which was co-written with Peter F. Hamilton. In addition to his novels, Powell has authored the book About Writing, a guide aimed at aspiring authors, and has co-written stories with authors such as Peter F. Hamilton and Aliette de Bodard.

Powell has received the BSFA Award for Best Novel twice, once for Ack-Ack Macaque in 2013 and again for Embers of War in 2019. Ack-Ack Macaque also became a finalist for the 2016 Seiun Award for Best Translated Long Work. His work has earned him other nominations, including the Locus Award, the British Fantasy Award, and the Canopus Award. His short stories have been published in various magazines and anthologies, including Interzone, Solaris Rising 3, and The Year's Best Science Fiction. His story Ride The Blue Horse was shortlisted for the 2015 BSFA Award. Many of his shorter works are compiled in the collections The Last Reef and Entropic Angel. His stories have been translated into multiple languages.

Born and raised in the West Country, Powell developed an interest in writing science fiction from an early age. He studied humanities and creative writing at the University of Glamorgan, now known as the University of South Wales, where he was mentored by authors such as Diana Wynne Jones and Helen Dunmore. Powell has lectured on creative writing at several universities and written articles on science fiction for The Irish Times. His first four novels received positive reviews, and in 2021 it was announced that his Embers of War series would be adapted into a television series.
