Joanne Michèle Sylvie Harris is a British author born on 3 July 1964 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. Of French and British descent, she was a French teacher for fifteen years, during which she published three novels. Her breakthrough came with the 1999 novel Chocolat, which was adapted into a film and allowed her to pursue writing full time. Since then, she has authored over thirty books across various genres including fantasy, psychological thrillers, novellas, short stories, and non-fiction. Her works often explore themes such as women's empowerment, folklore, motherhood, community, outsiders and outcasts, and food. Harris has held notable positions including Chair of the Society of Authors for two terms and has served on the board of the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society twice. She is a frequent guest on British media, writes regularly for the press, and has judged prominent literary awards, including the Orange Prize and the Whitbread Prize. Her writing has been recognized with multiple awards, including two Whitaker Gold Awards and a Whitaker Platinum Award, and her books are published in over fifty countries.
