Eric Gee: podcast appearances and interviews

Eric Arthur Gee (1913–1989) was an architectural historian with a focus on York and the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. He studied at Birmingham University and Balliol College, Oxford, where he earned a D.Phil. His early publications included works on Oxford masons and carpenters. During World War II, Gee served in the Gunners and the Intelligence Corps. In 1950, he and his wife Olive moved to York, where he established the York office of the Royal Commission and served as its head until 1970. His work involved extensive research on the medieval and later buildings of York, which contributed to the first five volumes of the city's inventory and his own publications. Gee was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1954 and was an active member of several scholarly organizations, including the York Philosophical Society, the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, and the Vernacular Architecture Group. His contributions to architectural history and heritage preservation are reflected in his publications and professional memberships. Gee's career was marked by a dedication to understanding and documenting historical buildings, particularly those in York, and his work remains influential in the field.
