About Eleanor Hadley
Eleanor Martha Hadley (July 17, 1916 – June 1, 2007) was an American economist and policymaker known for her research on Japanese economics. During World War II, she was recruited into the Office of Strategic Services and later the State Department to support the United States' war effort while pursuing her doctoral studies at Radcliffe College. Hadley contributed to the drafting of plans for dissolving zaibatsu business conglomerates as part of efforts to democratize Japan postwar and participated in the implementation of economic deconcentration programs during the occupation of Japan. Following her service with the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, she completed her doctorate at Radcliffe College. Although interested in a continuing career in government, she faced difficulties achieving security clearance due to being blacklisted by Charles A. Willoughby, an ultraconservative military officer, which prevented her from working in government for a time. Consequently, she turned to academia and taught at Smith College and George Washington University. Once her clearance was obtained, she worked for the US Tariff Commission and the General Accounting Office between 1967 and 1981. In 1970, Princeton University Press published her monograph Antitrust in Japan, which was praised by economist George Cyril Allen as one of the most comprehensive studies on zaibatsu and their dissolution available in the Western world. Hadley received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, third degree, from Japan in 1986 and the Award for Distinguished Contributions from the Association for Asian Studies in 1997.
