William Henry White was an American professional baseball player and manager in the late 19th century. His career spanned from 1875 to 1889, during which he played as a pitcher for teams including the Cincinnati Reds in the National League and the Cincinnati Red Stockings in the American Association. White was known for his impressive pitching accomplishments, including three seasons with 40 or more wins and a notable performance during the 1882 and 1883 seasons when he led the American Association in wins with an 83–34 record and a 1.84 earned run average. Over his decade-long career, White achieved a win-loss record of 229–166 and maintained a career ERA of 2.28, which ranks ninth on the all-time Major League Baseball career ERA list. He set several major league pitching records; his totals of 75 complete games, 75 games started, 680 innings pitched, and 2,906 batters faced in 1879 remain major league records. In addition to his pitching excellence, White served as a player-manager for the Cincinnati Red Stockings for 71 games in the 1884 season, compiling a managerial record of 44–27–1. He is also remembered for being the first, and for many years the only, major league player to wear eyeglasses on the field.
