Thomas Campbell (27 July 1777 – 15 June 1844) was a Scottish poet known for his work that blends neoclassical and Romantic styles of British poetry. His most successful poem, The Pleasures of Hope, was published in 1799 and is characterized as a didactic poem written in heroic couplets. Campbell also composed patriotic war songs including Ye Mariners of England, The Soldier's Dream, Hohenlinden, and The Battle of the Baltic, along with simpler lyrics such as At Love's Beginning. Beyond his literary contributions, he played an active role in the literary community as the founder and the first President of the London literary Clarence Club. Additionally, Campbell was a co-founder of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland and contributed to educational initiatives as one of the instigators of the plan to establish University College London.
