Daniel Jay Cameron, born on November 22, 1985, is an American attorney and politician known for serving as the 51st attorney general of Kentucky from 2019 to 2024. A member of the Republican Party, he was notably the first African American and the first Republican since 1943 to be elected to the office. Cameron attended the University of Louisville for his undergraduate and legal education. His early legal career includes working as a law clerk for U.S. district judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove and serving as legal counsel to Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell from 2015 to 2017. He was also recognized as a potential Supreme Court nominee in President Donald Trump's 2020 list. Cameron successfully won the 2019 Kentucky Attorney General election with endorsement from President Trump, securing 57.7% of the vote. During his tenure as attorney general, he challenged COVID-19 restrictions imposed by Governor Andy Beshear but was unsuccessful. His time in office was also marked by his decision as a special prosecutor not to charge police officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor, a decision that sparked widespread protests. Cameron ran as the Republican nominee in the 2023 Kentucky gubernatorial election but was defeated by the incumbent, Andy Beshear. He also sought the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell in 2026 but lost the Republican nomination to Andy Barr.
