About Amy McGrath

Amy Melinda McGrath is an American former Marine fighter pilot, political candidate, and analyst affiliated with the Democratic Party. She served in the Marine Corps for twenty years, during which she became the first woman to fly a combat mission for the Marine Corps and the first woman to pilot the F/A-18 in a combat mission. Her motivation to become a fighter pilot was inspired by her interest in World War II aviation and family trips to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Throughout her military career, she flew 89 combat missions against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Towards the end of her service she worked domestically as a political adviser, liaison officer, and instructor at the United States Naval Academy. Following her retirement in 2017, she entered politics and became the Democratic nominee for Kentucky's 6th congressional district in 2018, narrowly losing to the incumbent. In 2019, she announced her campaign for the United States Senate, challenging Mitch McConnell. She secured the Democratic nomination after defeating Charles Booker in a primary and significantly out-fundraised her opponent, but was ultimately defeated in the general election by nearly 20 points. McGrath has also founded Democratic Majority Action PAC and serves as a political and national security analyst. She announced her intent to run again in Kentucky's 2026 Senate election but was defeated by Booker in the primary. She is recognized for her military service and ongoing engagement in political and security issues.
