Douglas Grinslade Lewis, born April 17, 1938, is a Canadian accountant, lawyer, and former politician. Trained as both a chartered accountant and a lawyer, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing Simcoe North, Ontario, as a Progressive Conservative in 1979. During the short-lived government of Prime Minister Joe Clark, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Supply and Services. After the 1980 federal election, which returned the Liberals to power, Lewis moved to the opposition benches, serving as Deputy House Leader from 1981 to 1983, and then as Official Opposition House Leader until September 1983. Following the Progressive Conservative victory under Brian Mulroney in 1984, Lewis resumed roles as a parliamentary secretary. In 1987, he entered the Cabinet as Minister of State to the Government House Leader and Minister of State at the Treasury Board. He later served as Acting President of the Treasury Board and, in January 1989, was appointed Minister of Justice. He also served as Government House Leader from April 1989 to February 1990. In 1990, he was appointed Minister of Transport, and in 1991, he became Solicitor General of Canada. When Kim Campbell succeeded Mulroney in 1993, Lewis remained in Cabinet as Solicitor General and Government House Leader. Following the defeat of the Campbell government in the 1993 election, he returned to his law practice in Orillia, Ontario. Throughout the 1990s, Lewis remained a supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party, although he supported efforts to create the Canadian Alliance in 2000. In 2007, he was elected as a Regional Bencher with the Law Society of Upper Canada.
