Donald Henry Pleasence was an English actor born on October 5, 1919, and passed away on February 2, 1995. Over a career spanning nearly 60 years, he appeared in more than 250 stage, film, and television roles. Pleasence began his performing career on stage in the West End before transitioning into screen roles, including a 1954 BBC adaptation of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. He gained a reputation for portraying nervous or unstable characters, with notable film performances such as Flight Lieutenant Colin Blythe in The Great Escape (1963), the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in You Only Live Twice (1967), SEN 5241 in THX 1138 (1971), and Clarence Tydon in Wake in Fright (1971). He also had an acclaimed career on Broadway, earning a Drama Desk Award and receiving four Tony Award nominations for Best Actor in a Play. Pleasence was particularly known for his role as psychiatrist Dr. Samuel Loomis in the Halloween series beginning in 1978 and in four subsequent sequels. His portrayal led to a resurgence in his career, prompting appearances in numerous horror and thriller films produced across America and Europe. He collaborated with director John Carpenter on three projects, including Escape from New York (1981) and Prince of Darkness (1987). Recognized for his contributions to drama, Pleasence was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994.
