Richard Bruce Cheney was an American politician and businessman who served as the 46th vice president of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was raised there before later residing in Casper, Wyoming. Cheney attended Yale University and earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in political science from the University of Wyoming. His early political career included work as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger, followed by roles during the Nixon and Ford administrations, including serving as White House chief of staff from 1975 to 1977. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978, representing Wyoming's at-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989, and briefly served as House minority whip in 1989. Cheney was appointed Secretary of Defense during George H. W. Bush's presidency, serving from 1989 to 1993, overseeing operations such as Just Cause and Desert Storm. After his time in government, he was chairman and CEO of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000, receiving a significant severance package. In July 2000, Cheney was selected as Vice President George W. Bush's running mate in the presidential election, which they won. During his vice presidency, Cheney played a key behind-the-scenes role in the response to September 11 attacks and the Global War on Terrorism. He supported the invasion of Iraq based on assertions about weapons of mass destruction and links to al-Qaeda, though these claims were unsubstantiated. Cheney's political stance evolved over time, including support for same-sex marriage in 2004. Cheney died in 2025 due to complications from pneumonia and vascular disease.
