Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell, born on December 25, 1961, is a British former socialite and convicted child sex offender. She was born in France and raised in Oxford, England. Maxwell attended Balliol College at Oxford University in the 1980s and was a prominent figure in London's social scene. She is a naturalised American citizen and holds both French and British citizenship. Maxwell worked for her father, the media proprietor Robert Maxwell, until his death in 1991, after which she moved to New York City. In New York, she continued her socialite activities and developed a close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell maintained a wide-ranging social network that included influential figures such as Naomi Campbell, Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton, and Kerry Kennedy. In July 2020, she was arrested by the FBI in the United States on federal charges, including conspiracy to entice minors and sex trafficking of minors to Jeffrey Epstein. She was denied bail and her trial took place from late November to late December 2021. Maxwell was convicted on five counts, including sex trafficking of a minor, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022.
