Diane Julie Abbott was born on 27 September 1953. She is a British politician who has served as a Member of Parliament for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. Abbott holds the distinction of being the first black woman elected to the UK Parliament and became its longest-serving female MP in 2024, earning the title Mother of the House. Throughout her career, she has held positions such as Shadow Home Secretary and has been a Privy Counsellor. Abbott has been a prominent figure on the Labour left and has actively campaigned on issues related to race and inequality. In 2023, she was suspended from the Labour Party due to comments about racism, for which she later apologized, leading to her whip being restored before the 2024 general election. However, she was suspended again in July 2025 after reiterating those remarks in a BBC interview. Currently, she sits as an independent MP.
