David Wright Miliband, born on 15 July 1965, is a British former politician currently serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Rescue Committee. He has held this position since 2013. Miliband's political career included serving as the Member of Parliament for South Shields from 2001 to 2013. He also served in various junior ministerial roles, including at the Department for Education and Skills, before joining the Cabinet as Environment Secretary in 2006. During his tenure, climate change was established as a key policy area. In 2007, he was appointed Foreign Secretary, becoming the youngest person to hold that office in recent history. Miliband was also involved in the Labour Party leadership race in 2010, narrowly losing to his brother Ed Miliband. Following this, he announced he would not seek a position in the Shadow Cabinet to avoid perpetuating divisions within the party. He resigned from Parliament in 2013 to assume his current role with the International Rescue Committee in New York City. Miliband has a background that includes working at the Institute for Public Policy Research and contributing to Labour's 1997 election manifesto. He also served as Tony Blair’s Head of Policy and head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit. There has been speculation about a potential peerage in 2026 that could see him return to government as foreign secretary under Andy Burnham.
