David Marquet: podcast appearances and interviews

L. David Marquet is a retired United States Navy captain and author. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1981 and served as an engineer officer aboard the nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659). In 1999, he was initially selected to command the submarine USS Olympia (SSN-717), but he was unexpectedly assigned to lead the USS Santa Fe after its captain resigned. At that time, the Santa Fe ranked lowest in retention and operational standings. Marquet implemented a leadership approach focused on treating crew members as leaders rather than followers and giving control rather than taking it. This strategy resulted in the Santa Fe improving from the worst to the best in the Navy, earning high retention and operational honors. The ship continued to excel after his departure, with many crew members advancing to higher responsibilities and the submarine receiving ongoing awards. Marquet also commanded Submarine Squadron 3 until September 23, 2005. Since retiring in 2009, he has become a leadership expert and speaker, advising organizations worldwide on fostering healthier and more satisfying workplaces through increased employee autonomy. He has also shared his insights as a faculty member at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. Marquet is the author of the bestsellers Turn the Ship Around! and Leadership is Language.
