David Carroll: podcast appearances and interviews

David Carroll was an American actor known for his performances on Broadway, including his roles as Baron Felix von Gaigern in Grand Hotel: The Musical and Anatoly Sergievsky in the original cast of Chess. His portrayals earned him Tony Award nominations for Best Actor in a Musical in 1988 and 1990. Born in Rockville Centre, New York, and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, Carroll graduated from Dartmouth College, where he participated in college and community theater, taking on prominent roles in musicals.

Throughout his career, Carroll received three Drama Desk Awards nominations for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his performances in La Bohème, Chess, and Grand Hotel. The cast recording of Chess, in which he starred, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Show album. His work extended to film, where he appeared briefly alongside John Ritter in the movie Hero at Large.

Carroll suffered from AIDS and died of a pulmonary embolism in 1992 while attempting to record the cast album for Grand Hotel at the New York City BMG/RCA studio. Although he was unable to perform in the final recording, a bonus track featuring his solo number Love Can't Happen was recorded during a cabaret performance and included in the album release. His long-time partner was Robert W. Homma.
