David Russell Gordon Davies, born on February 3, 1947, is an English guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He was a founding member of the rock band the Kinks, serving as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist. During the band's active years, Davies also contributed vocals and songwriting on several tracks, including 'Death of a Clown,' 'Party Line,' 'Strangers,' and 'Rats.' Alongside his brother Ray Davies, the principal writer and singer, he was one of the only consistent members of the band. Beyond his work with the Kinks, Davies launched a solo career, releasing multiple singles in the late 1960s and eventually producing eight solo albums. He is renowned for his innovative electric guitar techniques, notably being among the first to popularize electric guitar distortion, which helped bring the effect into mainstream music. His signature distorted power chord riffs have had a significant influence on subsequent genres such as heavy metal and punk rock. Davies's contributions to music have been recognized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as a member of the Kinks. Additionally, he was ranked 91st in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time' in 2003.
