David Joseph Cousins was an English musician born on January 7, 1940, and passed away on July 13, 2025. He was the leader, singer, and the most-active songwriter of the band Strawbs, which he was a founding member of in 1967. The band initially performed as the Strawberry Hill Boys, playing bluegrass music, before transitioning through genres such as folk, folk rock, and progressive rock. Cousins also performed as part of various acoustic ensembles, including a duo with Strawbs guitarist Brian Willoughby, and as Acoustic Strawbs with Willoughby, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, until August 2004. His contributions to music span multiple genres and he was a significant figure in the evolution of the band Strawbs.
