About Daniel Day-Lewis

Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis, born on 29 April 1957, is an English actor widely regarded as one of the greatest in cinema history. Known for his intense method acting and portrayals of eccentric characters, he has received numerous awards including three Academy Awards for Best Actor. He also holds four BAFTAs, three Actor Awards, and two Golden Globes. In 2014, he was knighted for services to drama. Raised in London, Day-Lewis demonstrated early talent on stage at the National Youth Theatre and received formal training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which he attended for three years. Despite this traditional training, he is considered a method actor reflective of his devotion to detailed role preparation. Throughout the early 1980s, he alternated between theatre and film, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company and performing in productions such as Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. His stage career culminated with his portrayal of Hamlet at the National Theatre in 1989, after which he departed the stage. His film career gained momentum with supporting roles in Gandhi and The Bounty, leading to acclaimed performances in My Beautiful Laundrette, A Room with a View, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Day-Lewis earned his first Academy Award for his role in My Left Foot and subsequently received two more for There Will Be Blood and Lincoln. He has been nominated for additional Oscars and starred in numerous notable films. He retired from acting twice, once from 1997 to 2000 and again from 2017 until 2024. In 2025, he appeared in and co-wrote the film Anemone, directed by his son Ronan.
