Danica Anthony Roem is an American journalist and politician who has served in the Virginia Senate since 2024. She represents the 30th district which includes parts of Prince William County, notably the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. Roem is a member of the Democratic Party and has a history of breaking significant barriers in representation. She previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 13th district from 2018 to 2024. Roem was elected to the Virginian legislature in 2017 and is recognized as the first openly transgender person elected to either house of the Virginia General Assembly. Her swearing-in in January 2018 marked her as the first openly transgender individual to serve in a state legislature in the United States. In 2023, she was elected to the Virginia Senate, making her the first openly transgender person to be elected to a state senate in the Southern United States.
