Dan Berger is an author, historian, and professor at the University of Washington Bothell with scholarly interests in critical race theory, prison studies, and contemporary social movements in the United States. His work focuses on examining how imprisonment has influenced social movements, racism, and American politics since World War II. Berger earned both a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies and a Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Florida and completed a doctorate in communications at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books exploring issues related to prisons and social movements. His notable works include Captive Nation, which discusses Black prison organizing during the Civil Rights era and received the James A. Rawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians in 2015, The Struggle Within, Rethinking the American Prison Movement, Remaking Radicalism, and Stayed on Freedom.
